Healthy Discipline

Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track. Don’t assume that you know it all. Run to God! Run from evil! Your body will glow with health, your very bones will vibrate with life! Honor God with everything you own; give him the first and the best. Your barns will burst, your wine vats will brim over. But don’t, dear friend, resent God’s discipline; don’t sulk under his loving correction. It’s the child he loves that God corrects; a father’s delight is behind all this. Proverbs 3:5

Another one of my “first of the year” initiatives is to renew my vow to daily disciplined listening for and reflection of the Holy. This is the easy part. The next step is to discover what parts of scripture, what literature I will use to lead me. This is the interesting part. The hurdle, the really difficult part isn’t keeping with the discipline…it is the listening to and acting on the self-discoveries God leads me to.

I really do not want to know about all the mis-steps I make in being a child of God. I would much rather see the parts of my character that show how successful I am in life. Isn’t this the crux? Until I am ready to confront my sin, there’s very little change made, very little truth I can understand.

Thank God the instructions are, “Don’t try this by yourself.”

  1. This came to my computer today and I think it worth passing on in this context.

” A well-known speaker started off his seminar holding up a $20.00 bill. In
the room of 200, he asked, “Who would like this $20 bill?” Hands started going up. He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you but first, let me do this. He proceeded to crumple up the $20 dollar bill. He then asked, “Who still wants it…?” Still the hands were up in… the air. Well, he replied, “What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. “Now, who still wants it?” Still the hands went into the air. My friends, we have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It
    was still worth $20.

Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who LOVE you. The worth of our lives comes not in what we do or who we know, but by WHOSE WE ARE. You are special- Don’t EVER forget it.”

God loves us so much that he walks beside us and when we falter picks us up and carries us till we can walk again. AMAZING LOVE!.

  2. EXCELLENT story…and a comfort to remember that we are loved before, during and after the issues we confront. God’s presence is constant.
